This right here is called the Honey Tree.  I got this one from my bud Katie Hearn while visiting her and our friends in Philly. The honey whiskey and ginger ale are a gorgeous combination and the rosemary is very subtle taste but you can smell it with every sip. PERFECT fall cocktail.

Ingredients:

1.5 oz Jack Daniels honey whiskey
5 oz diet ginger ale
1 sprig rosemary

Combine ingredients, stir, and serve.

Ginger Beer Mojito

July 25th, 2013

mojito

This spicy, sweet, minty concoction is very good and I highly recommend it.  If a regular mojito and a dark n’ stormy could have a baby, the ginger beer mojito would be that baby. The union of two top-notch cocktails to create a new rum king.  Just like Will and Kate’s new baby.  See that? It’s both tropical and topical.

Kind of a reach to correlate the two, but c’mon…doesn’t the cocktail above look pretty majestic? Like it could be the sweet nectar of the gods and kings?  The answer is yes. Yes it does.

Serves 1

Ingredients:

10-15 mint leaves
ice
1.5 oz. rum
1 oz lime juice
4 oz ginger beer
1 oz club soda
lime and mint for garnish, optional

Directions:

Place mint leaves and pour a small splash of ginger beer in a 12 oz glass. Using a pestle or a blunt utensil, muddle the mint until leaves are sufficiently broken.  Add ice. Pour rum, lime juice, ginger beer, and club soda.  Stir. Add garnish and serve.

A root beer float for adults is still a regular root beer float, but we have an alternative option exclusively for adults.. one with hard liquor.  Yeah it’s pretty great to be a grown-up sometimes..

Ingredients:

Crushed ice
1.5 oz Pinnacle whipped vodka (they sell them in smaller bottles if you dont want to commit to a whole bottle)
6-8 oz. root beer, Dr. Pepper, or Coke- whatever you prefer
whipped cream
1-2 marchino cherries

Fill tall glass with  ice, add vodka and root beer. Stir. Top with whipped cream and cherries.  Serve with a straw.

This is quite a treat for summer and tastes exactly like a regular float.  I suggest you TREAT YO SELF

Bourbon Chai

February 20th, 2013

I’ve been up since 3:30 in the morning. For no reason.  First, I lied in the dark for an hour hoping to eventually sail off into into sweet, velvety sleep-but to no avail. Next I went into the other room and watched old episodes of Bob’s Burgers with my dog Homer, with his warm and fuzzy self curled up at my feet (for once he was trying to help me fall asleep).  There is something soothing about “already seen” cartoons..a comforting quality that almost always does the trick. Not today.  So I gave up and just decided to stay awake..

Fortunately I love my job and the people I work with, so today was just another day. With much, much more coffee.  Well, coffee and the random bouts of hysterical delirium that I remember fondly from exam week all-nighters in college.  For example: laughing a little too hard at this photo:

meine wassermelone

Ugh. I’m losing my marbles..

After a biiig dinner, a bourbon chai will surely help me along on my quest for slumber.

Ingredients:

1 tea bag of decaf (duh.) Chai Spice
8 oz. water
3 oz. milk
1 oz. bourbon, I use Bulleit or Maker’s Mark
1 tbsp honey or agave

Boil water and steep tea bag for 5 minutes.  Stir in the remaining ingredients and drink up.

Winter Citrus Cocktail

Happy Valentine’s Day drunkards!  Welcome to Love Potion No. 9 for 2013!  I’m going to  keep with last year and stick to the hooch on v-day rather than baking cookies or the like (although these look incredible).

I created this cocktail with my valentine in mind, who can go through a crate of clementines in 2 days and loves anything of the whiskey, scotch, bourbon variety.  Also, it may be the perfect Valentine’s day drink: it’s refreshing, slightly sweet, and warm and inviting. So whether you’re single, in a relationship, ravaged with scurvy or just thirsty, this cocktail is for you.

Serves 2

Ingredients:

3 oz bourbon
juice of 2 clementines
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp agave nectar or white sugar
seltzer water

Directions:

Fill 2 glasses with ice.  In a separate cup, combine bourbon, clementine juice, lemon juice, and agave nectar. Mix well. Pour over ice and top with seltzer water. Garnish with clementine peel.

The French Gimlet

Is anyone else yearning for summer today? Yesterday it was 8 degrees. Eight. Rather than face the harsh realities of Rochester in January, I decided to be in denial and pretend it was summer for an hour.  Denial activities included:

1. Wearing shorts (for five minutes- denial did not extend itself to looking down at my pasty stems). Pants back on.
2. Listening to summer-y music (see below)
3. Drinking this gloriously refreshing cocktail

Serves 2

Ingredients:

3 oz. Gin
1.5 oz. St. Germain
1.5 oz. club soda or water
1 oz. lime juice

Combine all ingredients and shake with ice.  Strain into a cocktail glass (I used my grandmother’s antique champagne glasses that I’m completely in love with)

rum milk punch

December 26th, 2012

IMG_1654

This is a great holiday party recipe.  It’s a fantastic alternative to the thick-as-molasses eggnog drinks for those of us who want to avoid diabetes for a little longer.

Cook time: 5 minutes
Total time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients:

6 oz. light rum (can also be made with bourbon)
3 cups of 2% milk
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 tsp vanilla
cinnamon and nutmeg, for garnish

Directions:
Combine milk and rum in a small saucepan on medium heat. Add vanilla and powdered sugar and stir occasionally for 5 minutes. Take off heat and let sit until cool.  Pour rum punch into four chilled glasses and garnish with cinnamon and nutmeg.  Serve!

*Extra credit: Put tinsel on top of a cocktail straw.  My old roommate Lizzie, who I miss terribly, used to do this for holiday parties and it’s as dorky as it is adorable.

Enjoy!

Dirty Shirley

December 10th, 2012

“Hey barkeep, I’ll have a Shirley Temple on the rocks.. 8 cherries..extra syrup.”

As a kid, one of my favorite things about holiday parties was the Shirley Temple aka the kiddie cocktail.  I felt like such a grown up ordering from the bar. This drink tastes exactly like a Shirley Temple (i.e. a little dangerous!) and takes me back to the good old days of wearing a dress that matched my Madeline doll, tights, and patent leather mary janes while getting hopped up on sugar cookies and cherry syrup.. ahhh memories.

Ingredients:

1.5 oz. cherry vodka
5-6 oz. Sprite Zero
a dash grenadine
marschino cherries

Pour ingredients over ice. Stir and serve.

apple ginger bourbon

October 14th, 2012

This is perfect after a long, arduous day of frolicking at the farmers market, cooing at the toddlers in their little sweaters and boots, and stuffing your face with maple candy and caramel apples.  Take a load off, friend.

Ingredients:

3 oz. bourbon
6 oz. apple cider
6 oz. ginger beer

Serves 2

Directions:

Pour over ice in the above order.  Stir and serve.

There are diet ginger beers available if, like me,  you prefer your drink sweet-but-not-too sweet.

This reminds me of long drives in the fall:
